The Fluorescein Leakage Test Method for Identifying Ocular Corrosives and Severe Irritants was officially adopted by the OECD as Test Guideline No. 460 on 2 October 2012.
This method is a cytotoxicity and cell-based in vitro assay that has been validated by the JRC-hosted EURL ECVAM (the European Union Reference Laboratory for Alternatives to Animal Testing and peer reviewed by the ECVAM Scientific Advisory Committee (ESAC).
Although this method cannot be considered as a full replacement for the eye irritation test on rabbits, the test method is recommended to be used as part of a tiered testing strategy as an initial step to identify ocular corrosives/severe irritants, specifically for limited types of chemicals. Thus, it will contribute to the reduction of the number of animals used as well as the pain and suffering of them during testing.
