Activities of ECVAM (the European Centre for the Validation of Alternative Methods)
On October 12 this year the ECVAM Scientific Advisory Committee (ESAC) met for the second of its biannual meetings at the JRC in Ispra.
The main agenda point of the meeting was the planning of the ESAC peer review of an ECVAM-coordinated study concerning three Cell Transformation Assays (CTA) for carcinogenicity testing.
These in vitro tests methods aim to model key stages within the multi-stage process of in vivo carcinogenesis. CTAs can detect phenotypic changes of cultured cells as a result of exposure to test materials which become evident through visible alterations in the cells' growth and proliferation behaviour.
The ESAC agreed to set up a working group charged with the detailed review of the validation study reports. The review is expected to be finalised by the end of January 2011. The final ESAC opinion is planned to be available by late February 2011 and will serve as a basis for an ECVAM test method recommendation to be published in March 2011.
