On 22 March, the European Union Reference Laboratory for Alternatives to Animal Testing (EURL ECVAM) at the European Commission's Joint Research Centre (JRC) hosted a coordination meeting of the International Cooperation on Alternative Test Methods (ICATM).
The ICATM has a collaboration agreement with major international validation bodies which are working towards the validation of alternative methods to animal testing.
Representatives from the US (ICCVAM), Korea (KoCVAM) and Japan (JaCVAM) discussed with their EU partners about several projects, such as approaches and strategies towards reducing or waiving the need for acute dermal testing under the European Chemicals Legislation (REACH). Ongoing validation studies were discussed - e.g. in the area of alternatives to skin sensitisation - and timelines for several peer reviews were planned.
At the meeting, serious consideration was given to the idea of developing harmonised ICATM recommendations for future alternative approaches developed by any of the organisations participating in the ICATM.
