Former ESAC

Up to 2010, the ECVAM Scientific Advisory Committee (ESAC) had a different structure than the current committee. The former ESAC was composed of Member State representatives, industry organisations, representatives from academia working in relevant areas, animal welfare organisations and other Commission services. Thus, the former ESAC had a double role of providing scientific advice as well as stakeholder input.

Composition and roles of the former ESAC

The former ECVAM Scientific Advisory Committee (ESAC) was composed of representatives of Member States, relevant industrial associations, academic toxicology, the animal welfare movement, as well as other Commission services with interest in the alternatives topic area.

The former ESAC had the following tasks:

1) to advise ECVAM on the development, validation and acceptance of alternative methods

2) to promote the activities of ECVAM in the EU Member States

3) to promote the acceptance of validated methods in the EU Member States

The former ESAC made formal recommendations on the scientific validity of an alternative method by issuing ESAC statements on the applicability of the method for a particular purpose.
